Proper Tire Storage Guide

Proper storage keeps your off-season tires from drying out, cracking or developing flat spots. These steps apply whether you're storing winter tires over the summer or summer tires over the winter.

Where to Store Tires

Transport Canada recommends storing tires upright in a clean indoor location, away from sunlight or strong artificial light, heat, ozone (from electric motors) and hydrocarbons such as fuel, oil and solvents. A cool, dry basement or garage usually works; keep the tires away from furnaces and heaters.

How to Position Them

Transport Canada's guidance is the same for tires on or off rims, with one difference for tires on rims:

• All Tires: Store them upright (standing on the tread)
• Tires on Rims: Lower the pressure to about 103 kPa (15 psi) to avoid cracking and deformation
• Spare Tire: Check its pressure along with your other tires each month

Before You Store Them

Wash off dirt, road salt and brake dust with mild soap and water, and dry the tires completely. While they are clean, check for cuts, punctures and uneven wear, and measure the tread, so you know before next season whether a tire needs repair or replacing.

Covers and Bags

Tire covers or bags keep light and dust off stored tires.

Before They Go Back On

Check stored tires for cracks, bulges or other damage, and set them to the pressure on your vehicle's tire information label.

Storage at a Shop

Some tire shops offer tire storage, which helps if you don't have space at home. Ask us about storing your off-season tires.
