When should winter tires go on in Ottawa?

Once temperatures stay below 7°C, which is usually late October to early November in Ottawa. Transport Canada notes that all-season and summer tires start to lose grip below 7°C.

Do I need four winter tires?

Yes. Transport Canada recommends installing winter tires in sets of four, with the same size, load index and speed rating on every wheel, and advises against mixing tires with different tread patterns or construction.

What Transport Canada recommends

  • Fit four matching winter tires. Transport Canada recommends installing winter tires in sets of four, with the same size, load index and speed rating on every wheel.
  • Look for the peaked mountain and snowflake symbol. Tires marked with it meet specific snow traction requirements.
  • Switch once it stays below 7°C. All-season and summer tires start to lose grip below that. In Ottawa it is usually late October to early November.
  • Check the tread before the snow. Transport Canada advises not to use tires worn close to 4 mm (5/32") on snow-covered roads. Ask us for a free tire inspection.
  • Check the pressure every month. Tire pressure drops about 7 kPa (1 psi) for every 5°C drop in temperature.

Ontario does not require winter tires, but many insurers offer a discount for them. Ask yours.
